Get to know Grand Rapids (and the world)

Kevin Romeo, Rhino Media owner

I drove to Kalamazoo Wednesday to chat with Kevin Romeo of Rhino Media for a story for the Grand Rapids Business Journal.

Rhino Media currently is making a documentary about the Michigan beer industry, so it was a natural conversation I had to have.

We chatted for a good bit about the movie; it’s going to be awesome. It’ll center around a few main players in the industry but touch on the whole state. It comes out in September.

He was a cool guy and we didn’t really talk all that much about why he does what he does. It was pretty obvious. He loves it.

We talked about what he does. He makes movies and takes pictures, but he likes to write as well. Right now, Rhino does a lot of projects for clients. But the beer movie is a labor of love. And it’s something he would actually like to pursue at a larger base.

He talked about talking to people about their jobs. (Sounds familiar.) People who hate their jobs, people who like their jobs and everything in between. What pushes them? It clicked in my head that this guy is someone who thinks about life very similarly to me, and I’m sure we’ll run into each other again in the near future.

But until then, keep an eye out for the Michigan beer movie.

Also, we got talking about my project with TJ Duckett.

“Everyone knows TJ Duckett, this is Kalamazoo.” But he went on to tell a story about how he went to an area school and matched up against TJ, who was a year or so older.

Romeo thought he had pretty solid numbers in shot put and discus and ran OK times. Then he would look up at the score board and see TJ Ducket a good 10-plus feet in front of him.

“I was throwing like 49 feet, and I’d look up and it says Duckett 62 feet.”

His coach would just tell him, “It’s OK, he’s a D-1 athlete.”
