Sitting in a booth at Derby Station in East Grand Rapids, Bryan Esler went over some very simple thoughts on life.
Really, it was quite a relief, listening to someone who doesn’t take a complex approach to life, not that most of my interviewees have.
His approach to life zeroes in on one of his three passions.
“I could approach this in any number of ways,” he said. “I could spread the good news of beer, rid the world of terrible websites, or take great pictures.”
But his favorite thing combines all three: MittenBrew.com.
“I can enjoy good beer, take great pictures of beer and spend time on a great website.”
Is answer to why are all humans on Earth and why we don’t care about it: “We’re here to drink and party hard, but not with PBR, but Dark Horse Plead the Fifth or Brewery Vivant’s Big Red Coq.”
He relates the environment to a pint of beer. Once it’s done it’s gone, you have to enjoy it while you can, but it won’t last forever.
Bryan has a stutter. It’s not terrible, and often times, you don’t even notice. But in December at the soft opening of the Grand Rapids Brewing Co., he came to my table and told me the server just made fun of the way he speaks.
I asked what makes people mean like that?
“They don’t understand, they don’t understand what the other side is going through,” he said. “I could snap, but I don’t have any idea what’s going on on their side.
“But if you don’t know why something is funny, it’s probably not funny.”
